New Delhi / August 2025: Aspiring international students face a shifting landscape this year as the United States tightens its visa policies and refines its student application process. From enhanced digital screening to revised fee structures, here’s how the U.S. is charting a new course for global education.

1. Fee Overhaul: Introducing the Visa Integrity Fee

Under the “One Big Beautiful Bill” signed on July 4, 2025, the U.S. has introduced a \$250 Visa Integrity Fee applicable to all F (academic), M (vocational), and J (exchange) student visa applicants. An additional mandatory \$24 fee for Form I-94 further increases the financial burden—expected to take total visa costs to between \$425 and \$473. These are non-negotiable, effective from October 1, 2025.

2. Social Media Goes Public: A New Vetting Standard

Starting June 18, 2025, all student visa applicants must provide their social media handles and set their profiles to public. Consular officers will review posts, comments, affiliations, and digital activity for signs of extremist or anti-American tendencies—refusal to comply may result in visa denial.

3. Mandatory In-Person Interviews Return

From September 2, 2025, most non-immigrant visa applicants, including students, will no longer qualify for interview waivers and must attend in-person interviews. This change may delay processing, so early planning is crucial.

4. Streamlining Yet Digitalizing the Application Process

  • DS-160 Submission and Document Uploads: Applicants must complete the DS-160 form prior to booking appointments. Supporting documents, including financial records, must be submitted digitally at least 72 hours in advance via the CEAC portal.
  • Digital I-20 Forms: Universities now issue electronic I-20, recognized as valid for visa applications and U.S. entry.
  • Expanded STEM OPT and Grace Periods: More STEM fields now qualify for the 24-month OPT extension, with a new 60-day grace period post-OPT completion.
  • Increased SEVIS Fee: The mandatory SEVIS fee has risen to \$400.

5. Security, Travel Bans, and Broader Immigration Shifts

  • Enhanced Security Checks: New AI-driven tools like “Catch and Revoke” target visa holders with suspected ties to extremist movements.
  • Travel Restrictions: Proclamation 10949, effective June 9, 2025, imposes entry restrictions on citizens from several countries due to security concerns.
  • Institutional and Political Tensions: The Trump administration’s revocation attempts of Harvard’s SEVP certification, the temporary halt to student visa processing, and political interference in exchange programs (e.g., Fulbright) reflect rising institutional uncertainty.
