Mumbai, 10 September 2025 — In a significant policy change, the Maharashtra government has announced that from the academic year 2025-26, students in Standard 4 and Standard 7 will again be eligible to appear for the state’s scholarship examinations. This marks a return to the pre-2016 system, replacing the current focus on Standards 5 and 8.
Why the Change?
The School Education Minister, Dada Bhuse, said the decision follows extensive discussions with teachers, students, and education experts. Key reasons for the shift:
- Many rural schools only offer education up to Std 4 or 7, meaning students in these areas could not take part under the previous system.
- Students in Std 4 and 7 face lighter academic loads, making these years more suitable for conducting scholarship exams without adding undue stress.
Minister Bhuse also indicated the government may increase the number of scholarships (currently around 16,000), and invite collaboration with the Social Justice and Tribal Affairs ministries to better reach deserving students.
When It Becomes Official
A formal government resolution detailing the policy changes—and any accompanying guidelines—is expected within the next one to two months.
Implications for Students & Education Equity
This move is likely to have far-reaching effects:
Impact Area | Likely Outcomes |
---|---|
Rural Access | Students in villages and remote areas will now have access to scholarship opportunities without relocating or missing out. |
Academic Pressure | Holding exams in less intense years could reduce stress and balance performance. |
Financial Inclusion | More scholarships and broader eligibility can support meritorious students from economically weaker sections. |
