Mumbai, June 2025 — In a historic move, the Maharashtra state government has approved sweeping reforms to its art diploma programmes—a change that marks the first overhaul in nearly five decades. Starting from the 2025–26 academic year, the duration of eight key diploma courses will be trimmed from four years to three, and the previously mandatory one-year foundational course post-10th grade has been restructured as an optional “Foundation Certificate in Art and Design”.
Reforms at a Glance
- Programmes impacted include diplomas in applied art, drawing and painting, sculpture and modelling, as well as craft specializations like textile design (printing, weaving), interior decoration, ceramics, and metal craft.
- Admission route simplified: Starting 2025–26, students can enroll directly after completing their Standard 10 (SSC)—without the need for the erstwhile mandatory foundational year.
- Optional foundation course: For those who wish to build foundational skills, the one-year (two-semester) programme will now be offered as an elective Foundation Certificate in Art and Design, accessible directly after SSC.
Policy Goals and Impact
Joint Secretary Santosh Khorgade has described the reforms as a “long-awaited change executed after 50 years,” aimed at modernizing art education, enhancing employability, and increasing student participation—fully aligning with the objectives of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.
An additional benefit: these changes are expected to empower students with enhanced professional and entrepreneurial opportunities in creative industries, elevating the merit of art diplomas on par with other technical qualifications.
Why This Matters
- Expedited career entry: The shorter duration and removal of mandatory foundational year reduce both time and financial barriers for students.
- Inclusive access: Relaxed eligibility criteria broaden access, especially for students previously excluded due to outdated prerequisites.
- Alignment with NEP 2020: The reforms mirror NEP’s vision of flexible, multidisciplinary, and skill-oriented education.
- Holistic benefits: The optional foundation course empowers students to tailor their educational journey while still pursuing immersive specialised training.
