A New Dawn for ITI Trainees
In a significant move to improve the employability and financial independence of technical students, the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE) has rolled out a new “Earn While You Learn” initiative for ITI (Industrial Training Institute) students across India.
Under this model, students enrolled in ITIs will now be able to earn stipends during their training period through apprenticeships, part-time industrial engagements, and dual training programs with partnered companies.
This scheme is being implemented under the National Apprenticeship Promotion Scheme (NAPS) and is expected to benefit over 25 lakh ITI students nationwide.
🎯 Objectives of the Scheme
- To offer hands-on industry exposure to ITI students
- To provide financial support through monthly stipends
- To boost skill acquisition and employability
- To build a robust apprenticeship culture in India
- To encourage MSMEs and large firms to hire apprentices
🛠️ How Does “Earn While You Learn” Work?
- Apprenticeship Model
After completing the first phase of ITI classroom training (typically 6–12 months), students can join registered industries for on-the-job training under NAPS. - Stipend Support
Students receive a monthly stipend of ₹5,000 to ₹9,000, depending on the trade, company, and state guidelines. - Dual Training System (DTS)
Some trades now follow a 70:30 model – 70% industry training and 30% classroom learning. Students spend most of their time in real work environments. - RPL & Credit Framework
The credits earned during apprenticeships count toward academic qualifications under the National Credit Framework (NCrF).
