In a major step towards advancing India’s Artificial Intelligence (AI) ecosystem, the Ministry of Education has announced the establishment of three Centres of Excellence (CoEs) in Artificial Intelligence. These centres will focus on strategic domains — Healthcare, Agriculture, and Sustainable Cities — marking a milestone in the government’s mission to integrate AI-driven solutions into national development priorities.
The initiative aims to strengthen research, innovation, and skill development in emerging technologies under the vision of Digital India and Atmanirbhar Bharat. Each Centre of Excellence will serve as a collaborative hub connecting academia, industry, and startups to develop scalable AI models tailored to Indian needs.
Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan highlighted that these centres will play a critical role in making India a global leader in responsible and inclusive AI innovation. He emphasized that AI should not only improve productivity but also enhance human capabilities and social well-being, especially in areas such as precision farming, medical diagnostics, and smart city infrastructure.
The centres will also promote AI-based curriculum and capacity building, ensuring that students and professionals gain access to next-generation technologies through research-led education. The initiative aligns with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which envisions a strong focus on technology integration and multidisciplinary learning.
With India rapidly becoming a hub for digital innovation, the creation of these AI Centres of Excellence is expected to accelerate innovation, create high-value jobs, and drive sustainable growth in the years ahead.
