The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur is all set to expand its footprint in the field of medical education with the launch of its Doctor of Medicine (MD) programme. This development follows the recent approval from the National Medical Council (NMC), marking a major step toward integrating medical sciences with technology and innovation.
According to the institute, the MD course will begin with 20 seats, and the academic instruction will be conducted at the Dr. B.C. Roy Institute of Medical Science and Technology, while clinical training will take place at the Syama Prasad Mookerjee Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (SPMSH), located near the main Kharagpur campus.
The SPMSH hospital has recently enhanced its infrastructure, including the launch of a fully functional Operation Theatre and in-patient services, which will support the new MD course. Plans are underway to further expand the hospital into a 220-bed medical facility, aimed at providing comprehensive medical and clinical exposure for students.
While the MD programme moves forward, the MBBS (Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery) course proposal remains on hold due to infrastructural and regulatory requirements. IIT Kharagpur is expected to reapply for the MBBS programme after completing the necessary upgrades.
The launch of the MD course reflects IIT Kharagpur’s long-term vision to foster interdisciplinary education, merging engineering, medical science, and technology. This move is expected to open new avenues in medical research, bioengineering, and healthcare innovation.
Speaking on the occasion, Prof. Suman Chakraborty, Director of IIT Kharagpur, stated,
“This is a transformative step for IIT Kharagpur. Our goal is to integrate technology and medicine to address future healthcare challenges through innovation and research.”
With this new initiative, IIT Kharagpur joins the select group of technological institutions in India taking a leap into medical education, signaling a paradigm shift in the country’s academic landscape.
