Kanpur | December, 2025:
The Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur (IIT Kanpur) has announced with pride that Prof. Amit Kumar Agarwal, Professor in the Department of Physics, has been awarded the Rashtriya Vigyan Puraskar 2025 – Vigyan Yuva (Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Award) in Physics, one of India’s most prestigious science honors.

The award recognizes Prof. Agarwal’s outstanding contributions to theoretical condensed matter physics, particularly in quantum transport, topological materials, and low-dimensional quantum systems, which are critical to the development of future quantum and nanoelectronic technologies.

🔬 Pioneering Research in Quantum Materials

Prof. Agarwal’s research focuses on understanding the behavior of matter at the quantum scale. His major research areas include:

  • Quantum geometry–driven transport and optical properties
  • Discovery of new 2D, topological, and magnetic materials
  • Collective excitations such as plasmons and charge density waves
  • Nanoscale device modeling for emerging quantum technologies

His work has significantly influenced global research in quantum materials and quantum transport theory.

🎓 Academic Journey and Global Experience

Prof. Agarwal completed his Ph.D. at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru, under Prof. Diptiman Sen, earning the Kumari L. A. Meera Memorial Medal for the best Ph.D. thesis in theoretical physics.

He later served as a Marie Curie Postdoctoral Researcher at the Scuola Normale Superiore, Pisa (Italy) before joining IIT Kanpur in 2012, where he has since become a leading figure in theoretical physics.

🗣️ Message from Prof. Agarwal

“This recognition is deeply humbling. My journey has been guided by curiosity and the inspiring academic ecosystem at IIT Kanpur, which has been my karma-bhoomi since 2012.”

🇮🇳 Strengthening India’s Scientific Leadership
