Ahmedabad, November 2025
In a move aimed at strengthening the bridge between academics and professional experience, Gujarat University has announced that internships will now be mandatory for all Semester 6 students across undergraduate programmes. The decision marks a significant step toward integrating practical learning, employability skills, and industry exposure into higher education.

About the New Policy

According to the university’s new academic framework, every student in the sixth semester will be required to complete a compulsory internship as part of their curriculum. The policy applies to all major disciplines, including arts, science, commerce, management, and technology, with the goal of preparing students for real-world challenges through hands-on learning.

The university stated that this initiative is aligned with the vision of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which emphasizes experiential learning, skill-based education, and employability enhancement.

Key Highlights of the Internship Program

  • Mandatory Requirement: All Semester 6 students must complete an internship before their final examination.
  • Duration: Internships will typically range between 4 to 8 weeks, depending on the course structure and department.
  • Industry Collaboration: Gujarat University has partnered with corporates, NGOs, government departments, and startups to facilitate placements and project-based internships.
  • Academic Credit System: The internship performance will be evaluated, and students will earn academic credits that contribute to their final semester grades.
  • Monitoring and Mentorship: Faculty mentors will guide students throughout the internship, ensuring relevance and learning outcomes.

University’s Vision

Speaking about the initiative, Gujarat University officials stated that the move aims to equip students with industry-relevant skills and make them job-ready before graduation. The university also plans to set up a dedicated Career and Internship Cell to coordinate opportunities and maintain partnerships with organizations across sectors.

This reform reflects Gujarat University’s broader mission to modernize its academic ecosystem and align it with India’s growing demand for a skilled, future-ready workforce.

Student Benefits

The introduction of mandatory internships will help students:

  • Gain firsthand exposure to workplace environments.
  • Build professional networks and practical knowledge.
  • Develop critical thinking, teamwork, and problem-solving skills.
  • Enhance their career prospects before entering the job market.

Alignment with NEP 2020

The step aligns with the National Education Policy’s emphasis on experiential learning and flexibility in higher education. It encourages students to apply theoretical knowledge in real-world contexts — a crucial aspect of holistic learning envisioned under NEP 2020.
