Guwahati, September 2025: In a major boost to healthcare education in the Northeast, the National Medical Commission (NMC) has granted approval for the Pragjyotishpur Medical College and Hospital in Guwahati. This marks Assam’s 14th medical college and the second for the state capital, after the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital.

The newly approved institution will admit 50 MBBS students from the 2025–26 academic year. Spread across a modern campus, the college is expected to strengthen the state’s medical education infrastructure while addressing the growing demand for skilled doctors in Assam and neighboring regions.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma welcomed the approval, calling it a step forward in the government’s vision to expand medical education and healthcare facilities.

“With this new addition, we are moving closer to our goal of having a medical college in every district of Assam. This will ensure quality healthcare access and more opportunities for aspiring medical students,” he said.

The establishment of Pragjyotishpur Medical College comes as part of Assam’s aggressive expansion in the medical sector. In the past five years, the state has inaugurated several new institutions to address the shortage of doctors and healthcare professionals.

Experts note that with more medical colleges, Assam not only strengthens its local healthcare system but also positions itself as an emerging hub for medical education in the Northeast.
