New Delhi: Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan has highlighted the transformative role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in reshaping India’s education system, stating that emerging technologies can help make quality education more inclusive, accessible, equitable, and student-centric. The Minister made these remarks while chairing the third meeting of the Consultative Committee on the Use of Artificial Intelligence in Teaching and Learning in the national capital.

Addressing committee members and education experts, Pradhan underlined the government’s commitment to leveraging technology to personalise learning, improve learning outcomes, and empower both students and educators across school and higher education systems.

AI to Address Key Challenges in Education

The Education Minister noted that Artificial Intelligence has the potential to address some of the most pressing challenges in India’s education landscape, including learning gaps, teacher support, access to quality resources, and regional disparities. He emphasised that AI-driven tools can enable customised learning pathways tailored to individual student needs, helping learners progress at their own pace.

According to Pradhan, the government’s vision is to move towards a student-centric education model, where technology supports teachers rather than replacing them, and enhances classroom engagement and outcomes.

AI Integration Aligned with National Education Policy 2020

During the meeting, detailed presentations showcased how AI is being systematically integrated across the education ecosystem in alignment with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. Key curriculum reforms highlighted include the introduction of age-appropriate computational thinking and AI literacy from the foundational stage, greater emphasis on project-based learning, and the formal inclusion of AI as a skill subject at the secondary education level.

Officials explained that these reforms aim to equip students with future-ready skills while fostering critical thinking, creativity, and problem-solving abilities.

Digital Platforms Leveraging AI

The committee was briefed on several national digital initiatives that are using AI to enhance learning and governance in education. These include DIKSHA 2.0, e-Jaadui Pitara, Guru-Mitra (TARA app), My Career Advisor, and Vidya Samiksha Kendra. These platforms are being utilised for personalised learning, teacher mentoring, career guidance, multilingual access, assessments, and real-time monitoring of student performance.

Officials noted that AI-enabled platforms are helping improve outreach, particularly in underserved regions, while supporting evidence-based decision-making through data-driven insights.

Focus on Higher Education, Research and Employability

Another presentation during the meeting focused on the growing role of AI in higher education, highlighting its impact on teaching-learning processes, research, innovation, and graduate employability. Discussions covered AI-enabled curriculum updates in centrally funded institutions, integration of interdisciplinary and skill-based courses, and expansion of both digital and physical infrastructure to support advanced research.

The initiatives are aimed at building future-ready graduates, strengthening innovation ecosystems within universities, and ensuring that India’s higher education system remains globally competitive while staying inclusive.

Officials stressed that the adoption of AI in education is part of a broader strategy to modernise India’s learning ecosystem while maintaining equity and accessibility. By aligning technology adoption with NEP 2020, the government aims to create a resilient, inclusive, and innovation-driven education system capable of meeting the needs of the 21st century.
